Since 2007, BWi have been working on behalf of the Chinese government developing designs for a new eco-city in Xinjiang province and work is currently started on site. In partnership with Buro Happold, the team are developing a site-wide masterplan and detailed design briefs for the new city which will be home to more than 300,000 inhabitants. The site is challenging – located at the edge of the Gobi desert in an area of extreme temperatures and rapid population growth. The solutions are innovative by necessity; applying new standards for materials, construction, renewable energy, water conservation, public transport and resource efficiency. The design will adapt over time to meet the needs of the emerging community and support it as it grows.
